Daily reading

How many pages should I read a day?

A short, honest answer — plus the exact math for whatever goal you're chasing.

Quick answer

The short answer

For most adults, 20–40 pages a day is a sustainable habit — about 20–40 minutes at average reading speed (~1 page per minute of fiction). To hit a specific goal, divide pages remaining by days remaining. That's your daily target.

Daily page targets by yearly reading goal
Books / yearPages / dayMinutes / dayDifficulty
12 books11 pages~11 minBeginner
24 books20 pages~20 minComfortable
50 books41 pages~40 minAmbitious
100 books82 pages~80 minDemanding

How to pick your number

The right daily page goal is the one you'll keep. A few rules of thumb:

  • Just starting? 10 pages a day. Less than 15 minutes. You'll finish 12 books this year.
  • Want to feel like a reader again? 20 pages a day. Two books a month, every month.
  • Chasing a yearly goal? Divide goal × average book length ÷ 365. Page Pace does this for you.
  • Have a deadline? Divide pages left by days left. Update every time you fall behind.

Why "20–40" beats "100"

People who set a high daily target usually quit within a month. People who set 20 pages and protect the same time slot every day usually finish more books than the 100-pages-a-day crowd — because they're still reading in November.
